OUR PARTNERS ARE WORKING HARD TO BRING THIS PROJECT TO LIFE
Johannesburg – Katlehong Township
The Leratong Child Rescue and Advisory is a community-based organization in Katlehong Township, located east of Johannesburg, South Africa.Over the last ten years, the organization has run a winter and spring School Holiday Camp offering mentorship programs to 1850 learners.
The programs are organized by Director Papi Thele, a community activist in partnership with Lawyers for Human Rights, the African Diaspora Forum, the Human Rights Commission, People Against Xenophobia, the Gauteng Provincial Government among others. The programs provide a series of lectures and life-skill learning modules to students in Katlehong and neighboring townships. More than 450 of these learners have received support from different institutions to further their studies.
The Centre aims to provide high school and out-of-school youth with life skills that give young people the tools to build their lives and aspire for a better future for themselves and their communities. The programs enables youth to:
- Build a strong and positive self-image and avoid negative peer pressure;
- Develop resilience in their day-to-day challenges;
- Discover, develop and maintain positive visions;
- Communicate effectively;
Our 2016 Program
The 2016 Winter School program has launched the Stories from Katlehong creative writing and reading program. Our focus is to get youth to write about their lives and experiences growing up in South Africa. This year’s graduating class will publish a book Stories from Katlehong and organize a reading of their work on 1 December, International AIDS day.
Our volunteers donate their time to teach creative writing to children between the ages of 10-18 years.
The Centre also offers volunteering opportunities which provide the youth a platform contribute to their community.
Stories from Katlehong program has partnered with Read Across Africa to donate books to Katlehong for a community library.
